We’re back for more Champions League action tonight as Tottenham host Ajax as the opener of this round of semi-finals.
Played at Spurs’ new stadium, Mauricio Pochettino is hoping his side can overcome the recent bad after having lost two times to Manchester City and West Ham a few days ago.
Ajax, on the other hand, has seen nothing but success in the past month. After they eliminated Juventus 2-1 away from home, they went and beaten Groningen and Vitesse 0-1 and 4-2 in the league respectively.
The two sides meet under different circumstances as Ajax are joint top with 80 points in the Eredivisie, while Tottenham is fighting for the top 4 spot in the Premier League, and they are not seeing much success. They are currently 3rd in the league but recent defeat to West Ham and their upcoming match against Bournemouth could put them in a bad position in the league.
Tottenham feels they should have enough in their locker to progress past Ajax, however, Erik Ten Hag’s side has proven multiple times that they are no pushover. Ajax’s well rounded and dangerous counter-attacking side could prove to be a bigger threat to Mauricio Pochettino’s tired Spurs side.
Tottenham is coming into this match with a few notable players injured such as star-man Harry Kane and Moussa Sissoko unlikely to feature at all tonight. What’s even worst for Pochettino is that he cannot rely on suspended Son Heung-Min, which has been the inspirational player to look for while in Harry Kane’s absence. Harry Winks and Erik Lamela are both confirmed to miss the match as they are both struggling with injuries.
Ajax, on the other hand, should be full of confidence, knowing that they have eliminated both Real Madrid and Juventus in the previous rounds. A semi-final is an amazing achievement for the Amsterdam side and they will certainly be up for the test. De Godenzonen are coming into this match after a 7-day rest and all of their players are fit and ready to fit for a spot in the final.
Tottenham Hotspurs XI: Lloris; Tripper, Alderweireld, Vertongen, Rose; Dier, Wanyama, Eriksen, Ali, Lucas; Llorente
Ajax XI: Onana; Veltman, De Light, Blind, Taglificao; Schone, De Jong, Van De Beek; Ziyech, Tadic, Neres
This is one of the most important matches for both sides in recent Champions League history, as this is the first time Tottenham have made it to the semi-finals of the competition. Ajax will be well and up for it knowing that they can sit back and counter Spurs easily, but they can also play if they need to. Ajax has shown us that they are not afraid to step up against the big boys in the competition, and they are likely favorites because of that. Son’s absence makes this game even harder for Tottenham, but they should focus on not conceding an away goal before their rematch at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
Score Prediction for Tottenham vs Ajax: 1-2
Scorers: Eriksen (Tottenham), Tadic and Ziyech (Ajax)
